HUD Radon Testing For Condos And Apartment Buildings

Condo Radon Testing – The Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2013 partnered with the White House Council on Environmental Quality to launch the Advancing Healthy House Strategy.  This new initiative made radon testing a requirement for HUD financing to protect the occupants from the deadly effects of radon.

Radon Test Results

If the radon test results show radon levels are above 4.0 picocuries (pCi/L), a radon mitigation system must be installed in the apartment or condominium.

The radon test must be conducted by a certified radon professional and must meet specific specifications.  Radon testing for HUD financing is a requirement for condominiums and apartments for several reasons:

  • Condos and apartments provide housing for many people and it is critical for radon levels to be safe because radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer.
  • Condos and apartment buildings design may pose installation challenges.  This is why it is important for the test to be conducted by a company that is certified for radon testing and knows the complexities involved with HUD radon testing.
  • The materials used to build condominiums and apartments may contain radon because concrete comes from materials from the ground and hard surfaces such as countertops may also contain radon.
